APG-Neuros Advances DOE-Backed Aeration Innovation with Ventura Control AI
APG-Neuros is proud to highlight its role in a recent U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) project, DE-EE0009509, “Transforming Aeration Energy in Water Resource Recovery Facilities (WRRFs) through Suboxic Nitrogen Removal”. The project demonstrated that operating activated sludge processes at WRRFs at low-DO with modern, model-based control can materially cut aeration energy while maintaining stringent effluent performance, with site assessments indicating substantial OPEX reductions and compelling return on investment potential.
The project’s final report highlighted the critical role of APG-Neuros as the commercialization partner bringing these technological advancements to the wider industry. APG-Neuros is honored to be recognized for its contribution, which has culminated in the development of our state-of-the-art control system.
As the report states, “APG-Neuros served as a critical commercialization partner for this project through the development of their Ventura Control AI (Ventura) system. Leveraging decades of expertise in aeration technology and wastewater treatment optimization and a diverse team of controls, aeration, and blower experts, APG-Neuros developed Ventura to address the dynamic demands of secondary treatment processes, providing substantial energy savings, improved effluent quality, and enhanced operational stability.“
Building on that charter, we are introducing Ventura Control AI as APG-Neuros’ innovative advanced control and optimization product for WRRFs—delivering predictive, plant-wide optimization.
Ventura Control AI — Treatment Modules
- ABAC DO Setpoint Optimization: Dynamically sets DO setpoints by load to meet ammonia targets and minimize airflow.
- DO / Airflow / Valve Control: Calculates zone airflow, coordinates valves with dynamic Most-Open-Valve to lower header pressure.
- SRT & WAS Control: Predictive solids management to hold MLSS/SRT on target and stabilize biology.
- Nitrate Control: Joint optimization of internal recycle and external carbon to meet pre-anoxic NO₃⁻ setpoints at lowest cost.
- Nitrous Oxide (N₂O) Control: Minimizes GHG emissions via coordinated DO, recycle, and carbon dosing strategies.
- Digester Optimization: Smarter mixing/feeding/temperature strategies to stabilize gas production and reduce energy.
- Dewatering Optimization: Real-time polymer and equipment setpoint control to improve cake dryness and capture.
